This position is with the Staff Psychology Program within the Office of the Deputy Secretary and is located out of the--Eleanor Chase House Work Release in Spokane, WA.-- In support of the agency's mission, "To improve public safety," and the supporting process of "developing the workforce," this position applies evidence-based psychological principles and research methods to help the agency hire the most suitable candidates, mitigate work-related stressors, and develop effective leaders.--The Staff Psychologist works with management to advise and consult on changes or alterations in the work environment to improve productivity and job satisfaction necessary to a successful organization. The Staff Psychology Program provides the opportunity to work both collaboratively and autonomously doing meaningful work in a dynamic environment. This program is unique to the State of Washington and is the only one of its kind in the country. You would be joining a team of seven Staff Psychologists serving the needs of DOC employees throughout the state. We support a team approach to working with staff, which allows for peer support, diversity of thought, creativity, and consultation in challenging situations. The Staff Psychologist empowers and builds relationships with employees and provides a confidential avenue to aid them in navigating through professional and personal difficulties by being available and responsive to their needs. Duties The Staff Psychologist intervenes and makes independent decisions regarding complex, confidential and sensitive staff issues. They provide brief, solution-focused counseling, consultation, and coaching to all levels of staff. Staff Psychologists work directly with supervisors and staff from correctional facilities, field offices, and justice centers. The Staff Psychologist is highly trained and skilled with respect to:-- Employee psychological testing and interpretation; Employee selection based on personality, suitability, and psychological stability; Crisis Intervention; Critical Incident Response (CISM); Promoting staff well-being; Short-term consultation; Conflict resolution; Educational presentations (communication skills, stress management, etc.); Providing referrals and resources; and, Collaborating and advising with the Appointing Authorities. -- Key responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to: -- Pre-Employment Psychological Evaluations: Conduct pre-employment psychological interviews with candidates. Interpret standardized psychological test results. Provide determination of psychological suitability. Write a comprehensive psychological suitability and stability report utilizing data from the psychological tests and interview. Discuss candidates' psychological evaluation results and decision, as to whether candidates' meet the standards for psychological suitability and capacity to carry firearms with the Appointing Authority to assist them in making informed hiring decisions. Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM): Serve as a liaison between CISM teams, Appointing Authorities, Human Resources, and the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF) as needed. Oversee incident response plans, providing guidance and responding to any issues that may arise. Advise and assist team members and employees in situations, including providing referrals and crisis intervention when needed. Develop training modules that strengthen CISM team members and leaders relevant knowledge. Facilitate and conduct training. Assist in responding to the immediate individual and group recovery needs of staff after significant incidents. Oversee and provide guidance for local CISM team leaders regarding group dynamics, teamwork and leadership development, growing ethical, engaged, effective, and emotionally healthy team members. Clinical Services: Provide consultation and assist staff in addressing personal and/or work issues that impact being the most effective and satisfied at work, including but not limited to encouraging constructive coping and stress management techniques. Provide community and online mental health resources and referrals as needed. Provide crisis intervention for severe mental health/situational needs, including but not limited to--facilitating emergency care, notifying authorities in cases of likely imminent harm to self or others, and or when a staff member's condition/behavior imminently threatens the safety/security/operation within the workplace.-- Advise appointing authorities of common trends and assist in developing workable solutions that relate to employee retention, job satisfaction, productivity, teamwork, and emotional wellbeing. Qualifications Required: Completion of a doctoral degree from a regionally accredited Institution, and a doctoral--program that is accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), or meets the requirements of WAC 246-924-046. Valid State of Washington Licensure as a Psychologist or the ability to obtain licensure within one year of hire. Familiarity and demonstrated ability to maintain ethical standards as set forth in applicable federal and state laws and statutes. Mature judgment, and strong interpersonal, communication, and task flexibility skills. Possess a valid driver's license.
