Job Description:

Major Duties
Obtains preliminary health history and makes physical assessments, recognizing the range of "normal" and the manifestations of common abnormalities. From the assessment, makes appropriate referrals to other team members or provides the necessary service, using Collaborative Agreements/verbal orders.
Functioning under established routines and Collaborative Agreements, orders x-rays, laboratory tests, consultation services, etc. Interprets selected laboratory findings and as appropriate, initiates action for necessary care in collaboration with the provider.
Teaches individuals and families about home care such as treatments, medications, nutrition and preventive health tests.
Promotes continuity of care by relevant health counseling, referrals for follow-up care, arranging for appointments, and collaborating with other agencies involved in health care. Documents such actions in the patient's health record. All charting in EHR is done within 24-hrs of the encounter.
Administers oral and parenteral medications, assists the physician with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Assists with casting, suturing, wound debridement, dressings. Is familiar with adult & children's immunization schedule and is able to give those immunizations.
Is proficient in drawing blood for lab tests, starting IV(s) and giving IV medications.
Records in the patient's health record, observations, assessments, nursing interventions and therapeutic measures administered within 24 hrs of seeing the patient.
Operates a variety of medical equipment: tonometry, electrocardiograms, pulmonary function tests, fetal monitors, IV pumps, nebulizer, and cardiac monitor.
Provides and/or assists in the provision of emergency treatment, and has a current BLS card.
Participates in the Peer Review process. Participates in continuing education training for peers. Helps with writing/updating clinic and nursing policies.
Prepares for specialty clinics by seeing that necessary supplies and equipment are available and work area set up to accommodate the particular activity.
Responsible for maintaining adequate supplies, equipment, as well as upkeep of the nursing service areas and maintains a safe environment.
Prepares and submits required records and reports in a timely fashion.
Assesses and treats minor health problems, or the stable phase of common chronic illnesses. Uses the Collaborative Agreements to order medication for appropriate illnesses by correctly following the algorithms.
IHS Federal Tort Claims Act Standard PD Language: Routine duties shall include providing nursing care services to individuals eligible for services provided by the IHS in homes, schools, clinics, job sites, and other community locations within the assigned Service Unit.

The Nurse must be skilled in physical assessment, following Provider orders, administering medications, immunizations and starting IV(s). Their ability for critical thinking is of paramount importance as they often have to make decisions regarding patient care. The NURSE must be able to follow verbal as well as written instructions. They must be familiar with the Indian Health Service (I.H.S.) Electronic Health Record (EHR) or other types of electronic health record and be capable of utilizing it. Case management for the Provider is also an element that they must perform. Charting must done within 24 hours of patient contact and must be accurate and reflect the patient's complaint, procedure and outcome.

Knowledge Required by the Position
Professional knowledge of and ability to apply nursing care principles, practices, and procedures required to assess needs of wide variety of medical, surgical, obstetrics, geriatrics, gynecology and pediatric patients, as well as, knowledge of the normal course of diseases, anticipated complications and indicated therapeutic intervention.
Skill in critical thinking, meaning skill in clarifying goals, examining assumptions, discerning hidden values, evaluating evidence, accomplishing actions, and assessing conclusions, is required to analyze the results of various medical procedures and translate into appropriate nursing interventions.
Basic knowledge of the Indian Health Service's Electronic Health Record (EHR) or other types of electronic health record sufficient to utilize it in charting in the patient's health record.
Ability to provide individual and family counseling, guidance, and health instruction so that they can assume responsibility for their own health issues.
Knowledge of pharmaceuticals, immunizations and/or desensitizing serums dispensed and their desired effects, side effects, and complications of their use.
Knowledge and skill in operation of specialized medical equipment, such as, cardiac monitors, nebulizers, fetal monitors, etc.

  • Prairie Band Health Services is subject to Title 22: Employment Code of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. In accordance with Title 22, this position is designated as a TIER 1 position. Preference will be given to individuals to the extent required pursuant to Section 22-2-4(B).
