Description: A Physical Therapist plans and executes rehabilitation
programs to help patients return to a higher level of physical
function after an accident or surgery. They often also help to
manage or lessen the pain experienced by individuals with
degenerative conditions or terminal diseases. Physical Therapists
assist patients through a combination of physical activity,
reflexology, massage, and muscular and skeletal manipulation. The
PT collaborates with other therapists to achieve the best outcomes
for the patient. The role includes 90% outpatient settings and 10%
inpatient. Key responsibilities include consulting with patients to
learn about their physical condition and symptoms. Reviewing
medical histories and referrals from providers is essential.
Diagnosing movement dysfunction by listening to patients and
observing their movements is a critical function. Developing
individualized treatment plans tailored to each patient's needs is
required. Coaching patients and teaching therapeutic exercises and
stretches to improve their conditions is fundamental. Using
hands-on therapy methods such as massage to ease patients' pain and
promote healing is part of the role. Keeping detailed records of
patient conditions, care plans, therapies, and progress is
necessary. Progress and current status must be reported to
appropriate parties, which may include family members and
providers. Additional duties and responsibilities may be assigned
as needed. Professional communication is vital. Maintaining
confidentiality in matters relating to patients, families, and
staff is essential. Interacting with patients and families from
various developmental and sociocultural backgrounds is expected.
Providing information to patients and families to reduce anxiety
while conveying sensitivity and care is important. Maintaining
professional relationships and conveying relevant information to
other members of the healthcare team is necessary. Initiating
communication with peers and patient care providers about clinical
priorities for care is essential. Reporting any security concerns
relating to medical and nursing staff to the supervisor is
critical. Teamwork is a key aspect of this role. Accepting
assignments based on priority and unit needs is expected. Working
closely with other care providers to complete tasks and provide
clinical assistance as needed is necessary. Reporting on patient
conditions to relevant staff, including physicians and nurses, is
required. Initiating problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
to foster effective work relationships with peers is important.
Timely attendance and adherence to the work schedule are essential.
Professional development is encouraged. Participation in continuing
education, departmental staff meetings, and in-services is
expected. Contributing to annual peer performance reviews as
requested is part of the job. Responding to problems and
opportunities to improve care and customer service is necessary.
