physical therapy program Description: A Physical Therapist plans
and executes rehabilitation programs to help patients return to a
higher level of physical function after an accident or surgery.
They often help manage or lessen the pain experienced by
individuals with degenerative conditions or terminal diseases.
Physical Therapists assist patients through a combination of
physical activity, reflexology, massage, and muscular and skeletal
manipulation. The role involves collaboration with speech
therapists and other healthcare providers to achieve optimal
patient outcomes. 90% of the work will be outpatient-related, and
10% will be inpatient care. Physical Therapists consult with
patients to learn about their physical condition and symptoms,
reviewing medical histories and referrals from providers. They
diagnose movement dysfunction by listening to patients and
observing their movements. An individualized treatment plan is
developed for each patient. Physical Therapists coach patients,
teaching them therapeutic exercises and stretches to improve their
condition. Hands-on therapy techniques, such as massage, are used
to ease pain and promote healing. Detailed records relating to
patient conditions, care plans, therapies, and progress should be
maintained. Progress and current status must be reported to
appropriate parties, which may include family members and other
healthcare providers. Other assigned duties and responsibilities
will also be performed as required. Professional communication is
vital; confidentiality in matters relating to patient, family, and
staff should be maintained. Interaction with patients and families
from a variety of developmental and sociocultural backgrounds is an
important aspect of the role. Information should be provided to
patients and families to reduce anxiety while conveying sensitivity
and care. Professional relationships must be maintained, conveying
relevant information to other healthcare team members. Initiate
communication with peers and patient care providers about clinical
priorities and report significant information timely. Collaboration
with other care providers is necessary to complete tasks and
provide clinical assistance as needed. Problem-solving and conflict
resolution skills are important for fostering effective work
relationships with peers. Attendance and punctuality are required.
Professional development activities include attending in-services,
continuing education, and staff meetings. Contributions to annual
peer performance reviews may be requested. A proactive response to
problems and opportunities to improve care and customer service is
