Title:591J-YN - Grounds & Nursery Services Specialist 2Business Title:Grounds & Nursery Services SpecialistAdditional Titles: Location:WSU SPOKANE CAMPUSEmployee Type:ClassifiedJob Family:Civil Service - OT EligiblePosition Details:Summary of Duties:Perform a variety of duties related to the maintenance and upkeep of the grounds at the WSU Spokane campus. Perform assigned work under general supervision. Work includes but is not limited to: lawn and plant care, walkway maintenance, picking up litter/debris.Essential Duties: Landscape Maintenance and Lawn Care: 30%Perform landscape maintenance to include; preparing soil, planting, transplanting, trimming, and watering plants, trees, flowers, and shrubs.Perform weed control in assigned areas to include manual weed removal and chemical applications.Maintain all borders, flower beds, and islands; plan, plant, remove dead plants or debris, and renew as needed.Perform lawn maintenance; seed, mow, edge, rake, aerate, and fertilize in assigned areas.Operate Equipment: 20%Operate motorized grounds equipment such as; trucks, tractors, mowers, edgers, blowers, chainsaws, sprayers, tillers, ladders, and trimmers in the performance of landscape upkeep.Utilize a variety of manual tools and equipment, such as; rakes, pruning shears, hand edgers, loppers, shovels, wheelbarrows, and pesticide sprayers.Ensure all assigned equipment is clean and properly stored when not in use.Tree Maintenance: 15%Maintain and inspect trees, shrubs, and plants to ensure their healthy, safe, and attractive condition.Repair, cable, fertilize, water, and prune trees, shrubs, and plants; remove dead, diseased or declining trees and plants.Recognize disease and insect problems, apply appropriate treatments.Train employees to perform related work.Pest Control and Management: 10%Assist in the identification and mitigation of pest problems to include; insects, rodents, birds, and mammals.Utilize chemical and/or manual pest control solutions as appropriate.Walkway Maintenance: 10%Clear walks, stairs, ramps, and plaza of snow, ice, leaves and debris utilizing a variety of equipment to include; ploughs, shovels, blowers, ice melt, and sand.Litter Control: 10%Pick up litter and debris in assigned areas.Other: 5%Perform other duties as assigned.Required Qualifications:Ability to do required work, and one year of experience or training involving grounds maintenance, gardening, plant care, cultivation and landscape installation.Additional Requirements:Physical ability to perform the duties.Ability to work flexible hours including, early morning, evening, and weekends as needed.Ability to work in inclement or extreme weather conditions.Possession of, or ability to obtain by the time of hire and maintain, a valid driver's license.Possession of, or ability to obtain the following licenses within six (6) months of hire; Public Pesticide Applicator, Ornamental Insect and Disease, PCO Structural, Right of Way Spray, and Lawn Safety licenses.Preferred Qualifications:Experience in outdoor work or yard maintenance.Possession of Arborist Certification.One (1) year of experience as a Certified Arborist, Arborist Apprentice or Arborist Assistant, or experience maintaining, diagnosing, trimming/pruning OR education related to arboriculture, forestry, or horticultureAdditional Information:In accordance with Washington State Governor's Proclamation 21.14.2, as a condition of employment, you must be fully vaccinated or have an approved medical/religious accommodation by time of hire.
