POSITION SUMMARY: The Campus Arborist manages, maintains, and cares for all trees and shrubs on University owned property. This includes pruning, diagnostics, treatment of insect and disease, fertilization, planting, transplanting, removal, and nursery management. This position provides leadership to the Tree Committee and manages the University certification as a Tree Campus USA. CORE RESPONSIBILITIES: Arboriculture Manage and implement the University Tree Care Plan, including tree protection, tree replacement, and monitoring construction projects. Manage tree inventory and maintain GIS database and maps. Collaborate with faculty and student groups in various departments to educate, inform, and advance sustainability goals and stewardship of campus trees. Manage Tree Campus USA program including maintaining Tree Campus USA certification, serving as the Tree committee chair, and organizing service learning and Arbor Day events. Design, source material, and install new tree plantings and landscapes in collaboration with grounds department staff. Create and present tree and sustainability tours and presentations to internal and public groups. Supervisory and Grounds Keeping Recruit, hire, and train summer student tree workers. Supervise students and seasonal employees. Application of pesticides and fertilizers on trees, turf, and shrubs. Remove debris, snow, and ice from walks, roads, streets, and parking areas. Plant, prune, mow, aerate, fertilize and water trees, shrubs, flower beds, and turf. Assist in growing and maintaining Grounds department social media presence. Other duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Demonstrated ability and knowledge to safely operate power equipment such as pickup truck, bucket truck, lifts, chainsaws, pruning and tree fertilization equipment, compressor, snow removal equipment, tractor, mower, sprayer, edger and sweeper. Demonstrated ability to use a variety of hand implements and tools. Willingness and demonstrated ability to communicate and work with faculty, staff and students. Compliance with Whitworth's campus vehicle policy. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School diploma or GED. Certified Arborist required or attained within 1 year of employment. Three years' professional experience in arboriculture and plant health care, including but not limited to pruning, planting, spraying, plant health care and diagnostics. Current pesticide applicator's license based on Washington State requirements required or achieve requirement within 6 months of employment. Demonstrated growth in cultural competence, awareness of societal and structural inequities and proven experience in effectively establishing relationships and positive communications with students and other constituents across multiple dimensions of diversity including, but not limited to, race, gender, varying abilities, nationality, sexual orientation, gender identity, class or religious perspectives. Availability for callback and emergency duties, including but not limited to snow removal. Physical ability to perform all of the duties of this position, including strenuous work outdoors in all kinds of weather and climbing trees as needed. Push and pull lawn mower - up to 70 lbs. Lift and carry backpack sprayers - up to 45 lbs. Lift and carry trash and recycle bags - up to 50 lbs. Lift various equipment, buckets, rocks, etc. - up to 50 lbs. Riding equipment - up to 2 hours at a time A personal commitment to the Christian faith and to the integration of faith and learning. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Two-year degree in horticulture or closely related field desirable. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: A background check, sexual misconduct check and confirmation of degrees earned will be required of the successful candidate.
